Sabha Pokhari Pilgrimage Trek between Makalu Arun Valey Trekking is one of the most sacred and at the same time most difficult treks.
Sabha Pokhari (4200m), a sacred natural pond located in the rural village of Sabha Pokhari in eastern Nepal, has both religious and cultural significance.
In the Dwapar Yug (era), a sage known as “Byas Rishi” is said to have convened an assembly of 8,800 other sages in the middle of a pond and delivered a profound discourse on morality and wisdom. After this event, the pond was named “Sabha Pokhari”, meaning “Meeting Pond” in Nepali.
It is believed that bathing in Sabha Pokhari can grant wishes. Newlyweds often visit the pond, have a holy bath and pray for the blessing of the child. The place becomes a busy pilgrimage site every year from Nag Panchami to Janai Purnima (August 1 to August 15).
Apart from its religious significance, Sabha Pokhari serves as an excellent trekking destination. The journey starts from Khandbari and travels to Barabis by jeep. Real trekking from Barabis, Phakuwa, Selele, Dharma Dwar and finally reaching Sabha Pokhari.
Through the pilgrimage, we can also enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Makalu in the north and Mount Kanchenjunga in the east.
Alternatively, one can reach the place by walking through Chauki, Gufa Pokhari and Milke Danda from Tehrathum. Whether you are looking for spiritual fulfillment or a trekking adventure, Sabha Pokhari offers a unique and rewarding experience.
Since there are no tea houses available along the route, we will have to carry tents as well as other goodies and cooking fuel.
Upon arriving at Tumling Tar port around 10:30, take a 20-minute jeep ride to reach Khandbari, where you can check into a hotel and explore the town. This is a great opportunity to prepare for the upcoming trek by gathering any necessary supplies. Alternatively, you can take a six-hour bus ride from Dharan to Khandbari and spend the night in a hotel to prepare for the trek.
After breakfast at your hotel in Khandbari catch a jeep for Barabise. Travel by jeep for about two (2) hours and get Barabise and check into one of the area’s best hotels for your overnight stay. Explore the local area. Find a porter and guide for your pilgrimage trek and prepare the next day trek. Enjoy a traditional Nepali meal of Daal Bhat. Spend the night at the hotel.
To avoid the midday heat, wake up early and order breakfast for yourself and your porter guide before packing your luggage. It’s important to pack carefully for the day ahead. Since today’s trek is not too steep or too high, it’s a good idea to start early and carry plenty of water in your bottle. You should arrive at Phakuwa village (1696m) around 4-5 pm, and you can stay overnight at a tea house there. Enjoy a well-deserved rest after a relatively easy day of trekking.

This is a difficult part of the trek, as you’ll be climbing up the hill for about 4-6 hours. Once you reach a hut at Mathillo Handung (2847m), you can prepare your food and stay overnight there with your sleeping bag and mattress. Rest well and replenish your energy for the next day’s trek.
Wake up early and fuel up with breakfast before starting the trek. Day three is the most challenging part of the journey. The steep climb up Coeletro Bhir (3535 m) requires a lot of energy. After crossing Bikhbari (3709 m), you will reach a hut for an overnight stay. Bring enough food and water as there are no water sources along the way..
Wake up early and have breakfast before starting the trek. Hike through Balaute Danda (3847 m) and reach Selele (4178 m) with water availability and good weather for food preparation. After 7 hours of hiking, reach Sabha Pokhari and clean and prepare a hut for an overnight stay.
