Overview

The Lumba Sumba Pass Trek, which is one of a longest walking challenging task, connects Kanchenjunga (8586m) and Makalu Barun National Park and Conservation Area which lies on the lap of Mt. Makalu (8463m). It is one of the new trekking routes that was first explored in 2012 by Trekking Agency Association of Nepal.

This 20-day-long Lumba Sumba Pass Trek starts from a flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur. After staying one night at Bhadrapur, the next day, you travel   by jeep to Taplejung.  From there you’re walking gradually gains altitude until you reach the highest point, Lumba Sumba Pass, at 5,160 meters. Numerous floras and faunas are encountered on the routes. The major attractions are snow leopard and red panda. 

The high altitude, long trekking duration, unpredictable weather condition, off-the-beaten-path travel, beautiful landscape, prove the   real condition of this trek.

Since You will be trekking through rural hilly areas for more than two weeks, you should be physically fit and mentally prepare to complete this trek. You will have to walk 5-6 hours on the average per day.

Itinerary

Earliest 45 minutes flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur. Meet and greet by our company staff at the Bhadrapur airport. Transfer to a nearby hotel for over Enright stay. Meeting and introduction the porters and the guide. Planning and Preparation for the next day travelling by jeep to Taplejung.

After having your big breakfast at Bhadrapur travel by reserved jeep to Taplejung. The road is blacktopped, goes past the vast landscapes, high hills, and small mountains passing through the beautiful lush tea garden of Kanyan and Fikkal in Ilamdistrict.

This day is the beginning of your Lumba Sumba Pass trek. The trek begins alongside the Tamor River with a moderate walk to Furumba then a climb up then descent to Siwa Bazaar. The trail leads uphill till the checkpoint of Kanchenjunga Conservation then gradually descend to Chiruwa. Overnight stay at a tea house there.

The second of the trek . Walk along the mighty Tamor River. Encounter two big stones with religious significance at the start of the trek. Passes through Ulnas trees. Walk of two and a half hours reach Tapethok, a small market with local tea shops where you rest a bit. Cross the checkpoint and start walking uphill you reach Lelep. Overnight stay at a Tent.

The third day after breakfast, walk way towards Ila Danda through a dense forest. Cross the beautiful suspension bridge and climb uphill through the pine forest until you reach the monastery. After you visit the monastery, start descending and reach Gowatar, a small village settlement. Enjoy the view, cross the Tamor river and reach Ila Danda with a majestic view of snow-capped peaks. Overnight stay at Tent.

Today after breakfast, pass through a lush rhododendron forest. reach and cross suspension. Then walk along the dense bamboo forest. Enjoy a popular place for Red Panda. After walking for about 3 and a half hours, reach a place Maguwa. To your destination. Your overnight stay at a tented camp.

After breakfast early in the morning, walk towards Jongim along the bank of the Tamor River. Pass through a rhododendron forest and a suspension bridge and reach Ramite. Enjoy the beautiful scenery of forest and rhododendron, a beautiful waterfall. Continue walking and reach Olangchung Gola village. Explore Olangchung Gola, a beautiful Sherpa village. Your overnight stay a tea house there.

After having your breakfast, commence your trek. The trail passes through pine and rhododendron forests. After a walk of two and half hours, you reach a place called Jadak. Walk onwards through the snowy track until your today’s destination arrives. Your overnight at a tent there.

Trek along the Tamor River. Walk for about 3 hours and reach a place called Tangchetar. Another 3 hours of walk you reach today’s destination. Your over night stay at tented camp

Today explore Lumba Sumba Pass (5177 M). This is difficult yet rewarding trek. Today’s trial trail goes up and down. After a challenging about 5 hours of walk from pass camp with pack lunch you Lumba Sumba Pass. Then you descend to Chaurikharka for your overnight stay. at tented camp

After breakfast we descend . After a walk of about three and a half hours, you come across Dobato . Walk onwards until you reach Thudam village. Your overnight stay at a Tea house there.

Today, walk along the Chujung Khola, pass small bushes and bamboo groves. After walking six hours you reach Yak Kharka Your overnight stay at tented camp.

After having your breakfast early in the morning start our journey. Your trail passes through dense rhododendron forest. After a walk of about three hours from Yak Kharka, you reach Chaurikharka

You continue your hiking downhill until you reach the Arun River. Cross a suspension bridge over the Arun and a scend until you reach Chyamtang. Your overnight at a tea house there

After your breakfast at Hatiya you commence these days; trek. You wall along the side of the Arun river and reach the Sacred Barun Reiver. Cross the suspension of the Barrun river and arrive Gola. After having some food at Gola you start your trek and arrive Simma Gaun in the evening. Stay overnight at a Tea house there.

Trek From Hatiya to Simma Gaun.

After enjoying your big breakfast at Simma Gaun you follow the path through Hedangna village and arrive Hedangna Gadi. After having some rest there you walk down the Arun River and cross the suspension bridge. Then you ascend slowly until you reach Num.

After having some rest and snacks at Num catch a jeep and travel for about 4-5 hours to Khandbari
Now this your time to say goodbye to your porter and guides

After your breakfast at your hotel you catch a jeep and travel to Tumlingtar airport. Your get your luggage checked and fly to Kathmandu.

How fit do I need to be to do this trek?

Annapurna Base Camp is a Grade B or a moderately difficult trekking route. So any fit person can do this trek, even if you do not have any previous experience. You should be aware of what to expect and mentally prepare for it. Then, as long as you will too, you can.

How long do we walk every day when doing Annapurna Base Camp trekking?

On average, you walk about 4 to 6 hours per day. One or two days can be as less as 3hrs and one or two days can be as long as 7hrs.

What is the highest altitude reached in this trek?

The highest altitude reached is 4190m. This is the elevation of Annapurna Base Camp. ABC is the highest we will climb in this trek.

What about battery charging and hot shower facilities?

Yes, you can charge batteries en route. Charger should be brought. There are hot shower facilities as well. You may have to pay a certain amount for both ($1-$2). Negotiate. Also, a hot water facility could be free at a lower elevation.

Are there ATMs on the way to Annapurna Base Camp?

No. There are no ATMs on this trek route. You will have to draw enough cash in Pokhara or Kathmandu. There are a number of ATMs in these cities. Everything is paid in Nepali rupees. So money should be exchanged before the start of the trek.

What about internet access?

Yes. The Internet can be accessed in most places. Sometimes, there might be some technical problems. The Internet in Nepal is not as fast as you are used to and at times you can just lose connection.

Is it necessary to hire Guides/trekking agency for Annapurna Base Camp trekking?

Not really. It depends on you. If you want, ABC trekking can be done independently. You could hire a guide and a porter by yourself instead of going through an agency or not hire a guide at all. Although, not having a guide can be a little problematic during the offseason.

It really depends on you. Is it your first time in Nepal? How confident are you of being able to find your way around? How pressed on time are you? If you go through an agency, it will be costlier but everything will be planned. You will only have to come, trek and return.

How much do guides and porters cost?

For the Annapurna region, pay for guides range from $20 to $30 per day and porters take $15 to $25 per day.
